The Journal of the American Medical Association recently featured an article detailing open data in the State of New York. The article, “Liberating Data to Transform Health Care: New York’s Open Data Experience,” describes an open data revolution promoting data that’s publicly accessible, available in multiple formats, and free of charge, with unlimited use and distribution rights. These advances are exemplified in New York’s open data success, which includes emergency response, public health policy, training, patient safety, and cost accountability. The ultimate goal of the open data movement includes government transparency, improved opportunities for research, increased data-driven quality, and better access to health-related information. The authors argue that utilizing administrative data is a key ingredient to achieving these goals in all levels of government.
